" When God closes a door, he opens a window.
My job is not to jump out of it. "

Editors note: I received this wonderful letter from my dear Aunt, Betty Gaul, for Christmas and wanted to share it with you. It has been slightly edited. I am forwarding photos of our family she requested. Betty currently does not have internet access, so feel free to call her or write or visit.

Bill, LeVonna, Alex and Annie,

Christmas is here again. I better get a card mailed to that great nephew and family. Hope everything is doing well in Texas. I am sure everyone is busy at school, etc. Bill, I am still waiting for a picture. Surprise me and send a little photo of your great family.

I suppose you heard Judy held a surprise birthday party December 10th. Put a picture in Harlan paper and had a card shower also for my 80th. I never had so many cards in a mail box all my life. There were at least 50 relatives and friends. The room was crowded.

Agnes and Gene Retz are living in Kansas now, near Dave and Sally since Gene has been having heart problems and Agnes had surgery. Agnes called. Had eye surgery.

Dean would love to hear from you folks, enjoyed your summer visits.

I suppose you heard Jackie and Mickey have a little daughter born November 20th. Nick and Jill's girl was 1 year old November 12th.

Bill, how is the sugar bowl and spoon? Are you using it? Remember it's very valuable. Bill, I am using your neat gifts which you brought last summer. Good to see you.

Will be looking forward for your summer visit. Dean and I felt very sad this week - Tony passing 2 years [ago]. We sure do miss him.

Wishing you a Blessed Christmas, A healthy happy new year. Happy Holidays.

Love,
Betty and Dean [Gaul]

SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT BY BARNEY ZIMMERMAN

I am 92 1/2 years old -  when you get that old, no need to try to
hide your age, it's now something to brag about - see! I'm still here. But I decided that I needed to give up some things, like singing in the choir. But since I was almost the only bass singer I needed a replacement to complete a four voice choir. So my grandson, David, who has a deep bass voice agreed to take my place, and his dad, Paul also a bass, would
help at times.  So I was free to go, no more stairs to climb to the choir loft - that was getting rather iffy anyway.

Maribeth, my daughter, asked me to go with her to the Westphalia Club House on Wednesday night at 7:30 when she got off work as it was taco night there. That was a simple enough request, so I agreed. When Wednesday  night came she took me to the "Club", and I was astounded at the crowd that was there - every table was full. My daughter had saved a
seat for me at a table and I still didn't think anything was out of the ordinary. Then she told me to look at the people on our table which was actually three tables end to end - and they were all choir members and family members.

That table was a surprise party for my retirement from the choir - I never  thought that my retirement was a big deal but the choir did. One cannot express the deep feelings  such an outpouring of appreciation brings.
Thank you all!

I joined our church choir after my voice changed in high school in Westphalia. At that time we had about forty members singing polyphonic music. After graduation I attended a seminary at St. Mary's Mission House at Techny, Illinois for five years. At Christmas we used to walk through the dormitory corridors at midnight awaking the community with songs to
come to celebrate the Midnight Mass.

After I returned to Westphalia the St. Boniface Choir was glad to have me back. But that changed some years later when Valerie and I decided that marriage was for us. We found a farm at Shelby where we lived nine years - we also raised five kids. We went to Mass at St. Mary's church at Avoca and we joined their choir. Once as I held Rae in my arms, I started to sing with the others, but Rae also started  to bawl.

It was in January of 1948 that Valerie and I moved to the Mikmak farm in Shelby, married just four months. We were overwhelmed by the good neighbors we were fortunate to have, Nels Andersen and family just west of us, Tubby Goshorn  southwest, Carl Mortensen  north, Delbert Pingle east, Bill Miller further east and others. I think they all have gone to their reward.

After nine years at our farm at Shelby we had an opportunity to rent a farm from my Uncle Charlie near the place where I was born, which we did. We lived on that farm from 1957 until 1979 when we retired and moved to Westphalia. In the meantime the St. Boniface's Choir occupied much of my spare time until this Christmas, 2006.

Dear Readers,

Since the fall of 1995, I have been writing this column. I am now
over 92 years of age and my wits are not as agile as they once were. It always made me happy to meet you folks and hear you urge me to continue writing. I appreciate this, but circumstances have not been kind to me with my dear wife in the Earling Little Flower Haven for nearly two years now. I want to thank you all for the gifts given me at Christmas time and your kind words when we meet. So this is my last column, at least for now. God bless us all.

Barney.

p.s.: A story or joke - whatever:

The parish had a pipe organ that was activated by a lever that was needed to pump air into the bellows. Once a professional organist was asked to play at an event and he used much more air than ordinary and suddenly the janitor, who did the pumping, quit. The organist rushed back to tell the janitor - "Get back to pumping, what's the matter?"  "Listen, I know how much air goes into the "Credo."

For those of you unfamiliar with the old fashioned pump organs some explanation may be necessary.  The janitor was used to how much air was required for the "Credo" when played by the regular organist.  However the professional organist needed more air as he played more keys.

After a forest fire in  Yellowstone National Park , forest rangers began   their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified  in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a  tree.

Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird  with a  stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from  under their dead mother's wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of  impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and  had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the  toxic smoke would rise.

She could have flown to safety but had  refused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had  scorched her small body. The mother had remained steadfast, because she had been willing to die, so those under the cover of her wings would  live.

" He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge. "
                                                    (Psalm 91:4)

I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me.
He said I was being ridiculous -
everyone hasn't met me yet.

Thank you for doing this. My Uncle Peter (Gaul) did the newsletter for many years and, as usual, you don't realize what you have until it is gone. I miss the family updates. It is hard enough to keep up with my 5 siblings and our sixteen children and their 21 children and their 3 children, not to mention my 60 something cousins from the Elizabeth/Peter Gaul family and all of their children and grandchildren and all of Nicholas and Susannah other descendants. It just boggles my mind.

I love the little bit of information that I get to keep up with the little bit of memory I have. Please keep me on your e-mail list. (explanation: I am a card dealer at the Mississippi Belle 2 Riverboat Casino in Clinton, IA. I do have the website Bookmarked.

In our life there is a single color,
as on an artist's palette,
which provides the meaning of life and art.
It is the color of love.

Greetings and a late Happy New Year to the Anderson Family!

Just wanted to thank you for providing the wonderful website for sharing Gaul related news and updates.  I always enjoyed the newsletters that Pete provided and kept us up on additions and deaths.

I believe that you may have me in your data base twice.  Since I am retired from the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, you could remove that e-mail address.

I look forward to many updates, and will keep your website updated with information from my side of the Gaul family.

Best regards
