Dear Family Members,

Please continue to share our family news and history.

NOTE: We have now posted photographs on the
PHOTO GALLERY
section of this website. Under Old Family Photos please find a wonderful collection of photographs that I discovered at Uncle Tony Gaul's
home many years ago.

These were collected by his Mother prior to her death around 1953.
They were never labeled, so we need your help in identifying these people. If you can assist us , please contact me at my e-mail address.

A special thank you goes to Jim Scheuring for sharing these photographs. He purchased the two volumes of photos
from the estate of Tony Gaul.

We would love to post
your
family photos and share these also.
Please e-mail them to me.

Hi Bill,

My name is Bob Gaul and I live in Sioux City.

I have some news, regarding the Gaul Family name, that you might want to publish in your GaulNews letter.

At the Luxembourg Feat of America & Heritage weekend in Belgium, WI. to be held August 11 - 14, 2011,
the Gaul Family name, along with nineteen others, will be honored. Information about this event can be
found at the Luxembourg American Cultural Society web site. WWW.luxamculturalsociety.org .

I will have a booth at this event and have information regarding the Gaul Family. This information begins
with Jean Pierre and Suzanne (Gischer) Gaul to current date.

Any and all are invited to this event. I have attended for a number of years. It is a great weekend.

If any Gaul family member would like to loan (or share copies) of family artifacts, share pictures and stories or even
work the booth for an hour or two, please let me know. It will be a great experience and a fun weekend.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Dear Dewie,

Thank you for the update on Barney. I believe Barney was the brother of a favorite uncle of mine, Jack. His wife was as close to my mother (they were sisters) as any two people on earth. They truly loved one another.

In the extremely short time we had together (visiting for only two weeks at Christmas time each year) I came to love the Zimmerman family like, well I was going to say my own - but, other than my mother, Marie, there simply was no one. So I grew to love them as the family I never had.

I have such wonderful and fond memories of being with the Zimmerman family that I cherish each moment even to this day. The few days we had together taught me to truly value the time I have on this earth. I am in tears as I write this, but I want you to know just how much love I felt in the presence of everyone in this blessed family. They treated me like a little brother and that was a rare and unique experience for this lonely child.

Alan and Glenn became fellow rascals and annual brothers as they showed me the ways and whys of farm life and living (I was truly a lost city slicker child ignorant in so may ways - actually, in every way! about the real world). But I could fear not, these adopted bothers never wavered in introducing me to the good life on the farm and garnering great humor in doing so.

I attribute much of my lack of seriousness about life today directly to them. They truly led the way in illustrating each day that one could laugh about everything that happened in life (and I do mean everything!).

Their good humor and great personalities (along with their innumerable sisters and terrific mother and father, not to mention older brother Duane Zimmerman of Orlando, who passed away in 2009, somehow gave this child who was so poor in spirit, hope for tomorrow and the will to live. I cannot thank each member of this family enough.

Love,

Bill Anderson

Dear family,
Maribeth sent this account to many of you, so you can either read it a second time or just delete it. I asked her permission to send it to the whole Zimmerman tribe.

I'm looking out at ice-and-snow. It took me forty minutes to scrape ice off my car, some of it two inches thick. It's remarkable that winter stopped on the day Barney died and people from a distance could drive safely home to celebrate his life.
Love and prayers,
Sr Irene

Here is Maribeth's account:

It is high time that I compose an email describing my Dad's death, wake, and funeral.  So sorry it has taken so long but my computer is in my guest room where my sisters took turns were residing this past week.

dad's health took a turn for the worse; with 4 of his 7 children at his side he was given the Last Rites and Apostolic Pardon by Fr. Chris Fontanini, Earling's pastor.   Dad then inquired “What do I do next?”  Father Chris told him that he should send a sign when he got to heaven to show he had arrived safely.  I requested that the sign be a rainbow, thinking that would be impossible in February.  I asked for a rainbow because Fr. Tony had sent a rainbow that had appeared in the western sky one morning shortly after his death.  It was a perfect arch from north to south hanging over the Westphalia cemetery.  Dad knew it was a sign from Fr. Tony and spoke of it often.

Shortly after I made my request, Dad told us it was late, and we should all go home, he wanted to get some sleep.  Shortly before 3 am on Thursday, February 10, 2011, Dad died in his sleep having attained the age of 96.

That same day as we were planning his funeral with Fr. Chris, there was a knock on my door and cousin Gene Gaul stepped in calling out, “Come here and look at the rainbow.”  Dad had sent a sun-dog rainbow (the only kind of rainbow that would be possible in February) as his sign that he had made it!  It, too, appeared in the western sky over the cemetery.

Friday, Feb. 11, from 5-9 pm Dad's wake was held in the Westphalia Church .  Fr. Chris led a rosary and prayer service beginning at 7 pm with a period where people could share their memories of Dad.  The Knights of Columbus in full regalia stood guard during the wake and presented the family with a tribute honoring his years of service to the Knights.  Dad was buried in his Knights of Columbus tux and sash.  Chris Gaul from Colorado was there in his Fourth Degree Knight attire.   He had promised my dad several years ago that he would come to the funeral and stand guard as a Knight.

Dad's funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1 pm.  It was a beautiful sunny day and quite warm with 30 degree temps.  Pretty amazing as it was -4 degrees the night Dad died.  A second visitation period was held in our new Parish Center starting at 11:00 am.  This allowed many who couldn't attend the wake on Friday evening an opportunity to meet with family.  Dad's godson, James Zimmerman from Olathe , KS was able to make it to this visitation and also attended the funeral. I was so happy to see him.

The Church was full with 205 people in attendance, the choir loft also was full of singers.  Betty Gaul played the organ, Dad's granddaughter, Sarah Schumacher, sang 2 solos.  Dave Hoffman sang "Just a Closer Walk" as the family entered the church with Dad's body.  All the grandchildren and two of the great grands had roles in the Liturgy.  Sister Irene read one of her poems as meditation, bringing tears to our eyes.

My sister-in-law, Bunnie, remarked that we had hit a grand-slam homerun with the funeral.  It was a joyful and faith-filled event.  We felt so blessed and loved by God and our dad.

Following the graveside service a light luncheon was held in the Parish Center for everyone.  There was a nice display of pictures and memorabilia which included a picture of the sun-dog rainbow which Stacey, Paul's daughter, had snapped the evening before.

I thank God for giving us such wonderful parents who always made the Catholic faith the most important part of life.  My cousin Glen Zimmerman remarked that so many people don't believe in God anymore and have a fear of death, requesting their life to be extended at all costs.  Dad had no fear of death, he was ready but had to patiently wait until God called him.  I had this feeling come over me the morning after Dad died in which Dad let me know that he was so, so very happy and that heaven was everything he'd imagined.  Dad always quoted "Eye has not seen, ear has not heard...what God has prepared for those who love Him."   It had come true for him.

Maribeth

Hello!

My  name is Jon Herrera.  I am a teacher in Wahoo, NE.

I once had a math teacher named Mary Frisch.  She taught me from 1985-1988 at Spalding Public School in Spalding, NE.  I am now a teacher and was wondering if the Mary Gaul in Earling is my former math teacher.  I believe she is married to Don Gaul.

If any of this is true, I would love to contact my former math teacher.  I will be teaching some math next year and would like to talk to her about the wonderful subject of mathematics.

If she has an email or facebook account, I would love to contact her and extract some wisdom.  If it is possible could you forward my message or send me her email address or phone number?

Thank you,

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gaul family during this time of sorrow.

May Lynda rest in eternal peace.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me.

My name is Angela Gorman, and I was adopted through catholic social services in 1978...my date of birth on my birth certificate say 12/08/1977, but that might of been changed.

The adoption agency told my adopted parents that my mothers last name was Gaul, or Gall, or Gahl,( not sure of the spelling) that she was a twin and 16 at the time of my birth, which would put her birth year at either 1960,61,or 62, and that she was from the Cederburg / Grafton / Theinsville,  Wisconsin area at the time of birth.

I've been searching for my birth mother for awhile now, and haven't been having any luck.

If you could please look through your records and see if there is anything even CLOSE to this, and get back to me, i would greatly appreciate it.

I have children of my own now, and would really like to have some sort of medical background at the least! To meet her would be great, but if she wouldn't want to, I understand that as well.

I do know that I have inherited a blood clotting disease, and would really like to know what else runs in my family.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

                 Sincerely,

              Angela Gorman    (920)318-6560

After many tests at (GW) nothing was found to be abnormal. he was returned to Good Samaritan. We at this writing are not clear if physical therapy will resume today Fri. 12/11.

Wed. 12/09
Dad was released and went to Good Samaritan for continued physical therapy. This was short lived as he complained of abdomen pain, and pain in his new hip (that's understandable). His persistent pain in his abdomen prompted Good Samaritan to call Genesis West and after consultation dad was moved back to Genesis West, for tests at the least.

Tues 12/08
Dad was supposed to go to the Good Samaritan for continued physical therapy today - the doctors released him, but we are having a blizzard right now, so it didn't happen.  He is walking some and that is wearing him out.  He is eating well and continues to be planning to get strong enough to return to his apartment.  And when my dad decides something - it usually happens!  When he get settled in we will send new address, but we also continue to get his mail from his apartment for him.  Thanks for all the prayers.  Love,  NANCY

Subject: Our Far-East Iowa News and Ramblings:

Nancy’s dad’s 95th birthday celebration went off with no hitches. Nancy and I hosted (Marge) from Redding, CA and (Suzanne) from East Lansing, MI. and Lynda flew in from Phoenix and stayed with dad. The reception at his residence, Heritage Court, went quite well. After the reception Sylvester (dad) treated us all to dinner at Harlan’s here in West Davenport.  Sunday Nancy hosted a bunch at our condo prior to out of town people returning, Lynda and Suzanne Monday, Marge Tuesday 06/23.

Dad/ Sylvester 95 does very well, he is active and gets around very well.

Grand-Ma Nancy & Aunt Crystal took J.J. our eldest Grandson to church camp Monday morning 06/29 for Pee-Wee camp. He was very excited and pleased to go. After less-than a half-an-hour he informed GM & AC that they could (GO NOW). Pee-Wee Camp is just 3 days and 2 nights and GM Nancy picked him up Wed 07/01. We are informed it was (THE BEST).

Friday 07/03 we intended to go the Bandits game and have a good seat for the fire-works but we were tardy in getting started, and by the time we dropped J & Nancy of to get tickets they were sold out. So we stayed down in the play-ground area for an hour, went and got ice cream, played games for awhile then went outside to see, what we could of the varies smaller fireworks in our neighborhood.

Last Sunday I drove the church bus. I haven’t done that in quiet a while and will do it again Sun. 08/02. Last night Nancy and I continued our striving for culture (sort of). We attended our 3rd Music Guild Performance at Prospect Park in Moline. All Shook Up featuring Songs of Elvis Presley. I was, once again pleasantly surprised. It did have a story line, but it was not just doing Elvis’s songs. The cast and the small orchestra in the pit did a very good job.

 LOOKING AHEAD:

Next month Nancy is looking forward to Seussical the Musical at the Music Guild. Even though it looks like only Jenna of the G-Kids can make it. Being a mother, and now as a Grandmother Nancy probably knows the Dr. Seuss books forward and back and is looking forward to the Musical Seuss. Here in Q-C area we are fortunate to have several musical and acting outlets. Playcrafters Barn, Q-C Music Guild, Circa 21,

Q-C Symphony, and the Richmond Hill Players. Quite a variety indeed!!

Believe it or not, birthdays will be upon us soon. Our own Crystal will be 28 on the 21st, not quite as old as our church, as it celebrates 170 years next Sunday 07/26. On August 10 daughter Brittany will be 27, Happy Birthday to all. Beleve it or not the

G-Kids’s unpack your back pack night is Wed 08/19 and the first day of school is Thu. 08/20, seems summer just started.

Upcoming Nancy and I plan to return to the bike paths and now canoeing of Wisconsin in mid September.

OTHER NEWS:

In our last news this was reported: Our semi-annual bid, scheduled to already be underway, has been temporarily postponed as our only customer (the company) has experienced company wide lay-offs and past destinations may not be future destinations. So we get to wait on (the company) till they decide what runs will change, then we will restart our bidding from scratch.

I am told the wait is over and the process will restart from scratch tomorrow 07/20. Deere in its wisdom has decided to cancel the Grand Prairie, TX team runs. Seems they want to hold then to the last minute and our area orders are down to this destination. So Utility Teams will cover the over-flow to Texas. A few other minor changes have been incorporated as well. Deere hopes to have the bid process completed by Fri. 07/31 and the bid go into effect Sun. 08/02. This bid period will end Sat. 01/02/2010.

In closing it has to date been a cool wet quick summer. I was told a long time ago that when you’re a kid time seems to pass ever so slowly, and the older you get time seems to pass in an ever increasing speed. So far I think that is true.

 Dennis & Nancy

Judy,

It was great to hear from you.  Please give your mother a big hug for me.

Alex and I are still planning to come and visit. We just have not worked out all the logistics.

By the way, Alex is working hard on a completely NEW format for the Gaul News and will be uploading it soon. I want to visit with Peter Gaul first, along with several others, to see if we can streamline the format and provide better service with the family website. I am planning a new blog so that I can just go on and on about this wonderful family.

What would you, or any other family member, think of a little (informal) family gathering, at say the winery / restaurant in Elk Horn, in late July or early August? Nothing fancy or time consuming, but just dinner and lots of confabulation. With too MUCH planning no one wants to ever do it again! If any family member reading this is interested please e-mail me at the andersonschool.net website.

I must run. Another school related emotional forest fire needs to be extinguished.

All my love to you, your fantastic mother, and wonderful family.

Love,

Bill
Hi Bill and LaVonna
It's been a while since I've taken the time to email.  It feels like I'm always rushed.....why is that?

Work has been very busy and when I get home, it seems like that's always busy too.
We are enjoying the five grandkids   Over the July 4th weekend we shot off a lot of parachutes and sparklers.   Grandpa is an easy mark when a cute little kid begs him to buy some more!

We went up to visit mom this weekend.  She's doing good.   She seems to be so much happier lately.  I think it's because she and her doctor finally figured out what was making her so sick after her bladder procedures (where they laser out the cancerous tumors).  It was the dumb pain pills.  She doesn't take them now -- just takes and advil and she doesn't get sick to her stomach, doesn't throw up, has an appetite immediately.  It was really a good thing.  Also, the doctor said they could limit those procedures to every 6 months instead of every 3 months. She also got some new teeth........she's a new woman!

My daughter Jaclyn had a little boy on May 19th.   He joins a big brother Max (5) and a big sister, Briella (2).   They named him Major.........so I guess he will always command some respect!.

My oldest daughter Jill is doing good so far.   She is expecting identical twin girls. She is 29 weeks along.......and so far so good. Jill will be very busy when they arrive. She has a 3 yr. old daughter, Ava and a 1/5 yrs old son, Tyler. 4 kids under 4......wow. Ken and I know we'll help out as much as possible. That's a housefull.

How are you  and your family doing?   I seem to think of Alex and Annie as little kids - but somehow, I bet they grew up.  Where do the years go?  I saw quite a few cousins this year, at Uncle Gene's and Aunt Pauline's funeral.    It's amazing how the next generation looks like the last one.

I better get back to work.   I'd love to hear from you.  Please keep in touch.

Judy

Kristin Graeve & Jarad Zimmerman

Kathy Graeve of Neola, Iowa, and Mel Graeve of Earling, Iowa, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Kristin Frances Graeve, to Jarad Wayne Zimmerman.

Jarad is the son of Glen and Terry Zimmerman of Council Bluffs. The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Elva Graeve of Earling, the late Chris Graeve, Frank Casey of Griswold, Iowa, and the late Kathryn Casey.

The future groom is the grandson of Irene Peterson of Shelby, Iowa, the late Wayne Peterson, and the late Jack and Lipharda Zimmerman.

The bride-to-be graduated with degrees in journalism, public relations and music from Creighton University. She is currently employed in the Human Resources Department at Creighton.

The future groom graduated with degrees in psychology and sociology, with an endorsement in coaching, from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. He is currently employed as a training supervisor at United Parcel Service in Bellevue.

Kristin and Jarad plan to be married on Friday, July 17, 2009, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Neola.

Hello,

Hi LeVonna  &  Bill,

It was great to receive your email.
I tried this email address before and never got a response so I thought I probably had the wrong address.
We should be good to go now!

My family continues to grow.    Ken and I are enjoying our 4 grandkids.  They are ages 5, 3, 2 and 1!   There's also one on the way in May.     So far the score is 2 boys and 2 girls....so this new baby will be the tie-breaker.

Ken just retired from Qwest after 35 years.  That's enough for one place.   He's working for me now....remodeling projects.   It's great!    He'll wait a few months and decide later if he wants to get a real job again.

We went to Aunt Pauline's funeral a couple of weeks ago.     While it was sad, it was also fun to see a lot of our cousins again.    All of Pauline's kids were with her when she died.  That's quite a feat for such a large family.  Aunt Agnes, Aunt Genevieve, Aunt Sylvia and my Mom are the only ones left.     Isn't that a somber thought.....we're now the old generation!     I still feel like "one of the cousins" - still a kid!

I have gone out to the Gaul News website.  That's such a nice thing you are doing.  I'm sure it translates to many hours of work.   No endeavor like that is ever real easy.   We have such a huge extended family.   Thanks so much for doing that.

My mom is always thrilled to hear from you.   She gets thrilled when you visit or call.   As you know, she rarely leaves the confines of her apartment/home complex.  She feels safe there and gets very nervous venturing out into the world.  She fell a few months back.  She sprained her ankle and now she's really terrified of walking outside.    Oh well.

As far as the "Freeze Out"..........I do so remember that.   The texas kid wasn't so tough!  I'm not confessing to nuttin' -  you hear me?

Please keep in touch.   I love hearing from you.   Get me caught up on how  Annie and Alex are doing.    I still picture them as little kids (year 2000).   I can't believe we're so old that we have grown children!

Take care.

Judy Weis
Ed. Note:

It was great to hear from you Judy. I have so many fond memories of being with you and your family during our visits to Iowa.

Please extend my deepest regard and love to your Mother. She is always in my prayers.

Love,

Bill Anderson

(In the late '70s, Kurzweil's character-recognition algorithms were used to scan legal documents and articles from newspapers and magazines. The result was the Lexis and Nexis databases. And a few years later, Kurzweil released speech recognition software that is the direct ancestor of today's robot customer service agents. Their irritating mistakes taking orders and answering questions would seem to offer convincing evidence that real AI is still many years away. But Kurzweil draws the opposite conclusion. He admits that not everything he has invented works exactly as we might wish. But if you will grant him exponential progress, the fact that we already have virtual robots standing in for retail clerks, and cell phones that read books out loud, is evidence that the world is about to change in even more fantastical ways.)

Ed. Note: I encourage you to visit one of Ray's Web sites. You WILL be amazed. KurzweilAI.net

Ray Kurzweil was the principal developer of the first omni-font optical character recognition, the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind, the first CCD flat-bed scanner, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, the first music synthesizer capable of recreating the grand piano and other orchestral instruments, and the first commercially marketed large-vocabulary speech recognition. Ray has successfully founded and developed nine businesses in OCR, music synthesis, speech recognition, reading technology, virtual reality, financial investment, cybernetic art, and other areas of artificial intelligence . All of these technologies continue today as market leaders. Ray's Web site, KurzweilAI.net, is a leading resource on artificial intelligence.

Ray Kurzweil was inducted in 2002 into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, established by the U.S. Patent Office. Memories of Laura

In response to your family’s request for stories of Laura growing up. As Laura’s twin brother, I have many memories of Laura’s younger years.

I will try and put my memories down on paper. I will try and make this about Laura and not me, understanding that as twins we were very close growing up and perhaps it will be impossible keeping me out of it totally. I apologize if this sounds rambling.  I will put my memories down in chronological order.

On February 15, 1938 in the east bedroom on the farm in Iowa, twins were born to Alphonse and Regina Gaul.

They named the Boy Lawrence. (Later called me Larry)

They named the girl Laura

Times were much different back then.

1938 prices

-Average income   $ 1.731.00

-New car               $     860.00

-New House          $ 3.900.00

-Loaf of bread       $          .09

-Gallon of gas        $          .10

-Gallon of Milk     $           .50

I can remember us being dressed alike only once. We must have been about two and mom dressed us in identical red snow suits. Having a twin gives one a perspective others don’t have. Especially when we were young seeing Laura in that red snow suit was also seeing myself.

Laura and I played together all the time, some times with tragic results. Our farm did not have electricity until we were about 7 or 8 years old. We always had a decorated Christmas tree candles were held onto the tree with clips. The tree must have been dry. (You must understand before electricity we had ready access to matches. Adults had to light fires often as well as kerosene lamps. For convenience every house had a metal box on the wall with 100 or so stick matches. Unlike book matches of today, to light them you could strike then on almost anything.) At any rate we were about 4 or 5 years old and set the entire Christmas tree on fire. I remember the whole thing on ablaze. We ran and told mom who with the help our brothers put out the fire they managed to put it out but not without damage to the room.

A couple years later we tried to light a perfumed alcohol lamp standing on the windowsill by lace curtains which caught on fire. That time five gallons of sour milk was used to put out the fire. (Those days 5 gallons of skim milk was left standing to sour for the laying hens.) The sour milk must have been handy but you can imagine the mess it made. That room also needed to be repaired. That must have been another day we were not very popular.

One year the folks were gone around Christmas time and Laura and I found the Christmas gifts behind the bed in the folks room. We carried them out and put them all on the kitchen table thinking Mom and Dad would be happy we found them. Of course they were not happy at all. We were threatened with “now Santa may take them back because you were snooping.”

We started school, first grade in 1945, (there was no kindergarten those days) learning came easy for us both. We enjoyed reading I think our grades were about equal until the 4th grade. Then I discovered basketball and study was not my priority.

Often times I didn’t know what the homework assignment was but it was no problem because Laura always knew. Laura had much better report cards then me from the 4th grade on. I started to study again in the last part of the 8th grade and worked really hard in high school but never caught up. From my parents point of view Laura must have been an ideal child. Responsible in every way. I don’t ever remember her getting spanks. I am sure I received enough spanking for both of us.

Laura and I grew up in a very religious family. First Communion and Corpus Christi and other Catholic Church celebrations we dressed all in white and as a class processed around church. In my minds eye I can see Laura as a little girl and mom fussing over her dress.

Laura and I spent a lot of time together. I remember going for walks around the farm, picking flowers along our little creek. Finding frogs, tiny baby rabbits, fox dens, groundhog burrows etc.

One night we were all gathered around the supper table. Laura sounding upset stated that Larry was always betting at school I piped right up I’ll bet you $5.00 I don’t bet. Laura must have been embarrassed with her twin brother at school. My Brother Gerald loves to repeat that story at our family gatherings.

My mom and dad had lots and lots of married brothers and sisters, we had loads of cousins many about our age. Almost every Sunday there were visiting aunts and uncles at our house or we at theirs.

We played typical games of softball, hide and go seek; one of our favorite games was ghost. When ever my one uncle would visit in the evening, we kids would go upstairs, turn out most of the lights, put white sheets over our selves and run around scaring the wits out of each other. I can remember our parents sometimes yelling upstairs for us not to make so much noise.

Picking up the eggs

To understand this story you may need a little background. When Laura and I were growing up, the egg money was very important, especially to our mother Regina.  Back then I am sure the egg money was very important to all farm wives.

This was before women’s lib, but even then it was understood the egg money belonged to Mom and she could spend it as she saw fit.

A common topic of conversation among mothers back then was, “how are your laying hens doing?” The answer to this question determined how much money there would be to run the household. It was the egg money that had to pay for the groceries, clothes and everything that was needed to run the house.

If the hens were lying well there would perhaps even be some money left over for the nice things mothers like to buy for their home and family. It was the egg money that gave moms a small measure of independence.

Getting on with the story, the task of gathering the eggs often fell to the "twins"

On that particular day one of us dropped an egg. Much to our surprise all the hens around the broken egg rushed over to eat as much of the egg as fast as they could.

Wow! We discovered chickens like eggs.

I am not sure who got the idea and I will not venture to guess because Laura is not here to defend herself.

At any rate one of us threw an egg against the wall, of course it broke and fell on the floor, all then hens rushed over to consume the egg.

What fun! We threw another and another…

That night mom was beside herself the chickens were down to half the eggs the they had laid the day before.

What could have caused her hens to go down so much in production.

It wasn’t until the next day that we were in trouble, because the next day production was back to normal.

Somehow Mom knew the "twins" had something to do with the mystery of the disappearing eggs.

Laura and I were grilled until we confessed to the crime. We had a finger shook in front of our face and admonished, that "That was not going to happen again!

At the time we had no idea we had threatened the economic well-being of the household.

Needless to say from that day onward we were very careful when gathering the eggs.

Laura and I traveled to school with a horse and buggy for our 1st and 2nd grade. Our older brother Eldon drove the horse. Eldon was in the 7th grade. We had a beautiful racehorse named Peggy. (Dad bought her from a conductor he met on a train.) Peggy could run faster than any of the other horses taking kids to school. On occasion we would pass them with Peggy.  Dad also had a team of draft horses; they were percherons named Sam and Queen.

I would always ask Laura to go horseback riding with me and she would always say "NO!”

I would tell her Queeine was old and slow, a very gentle horse. Sam on the other hand had more mustard. This happened when we were in about the 5th or 6th grade.

One day she must have been tired of saying no and with a lot of trepidation agreed to go riding with me.

We never had any saddles so I always rode bareback.

I remember how pleased I was that she agreed to go riding with me. I helped Laura get on Queenie back. Then we started riding west down the trail behind our farmhouse.

We rode at a walk for about a quarter mile.

Then what I did must have been the most unkind thing I ever did to her.

Well my macho self got the best of me. It was show off time for her twin brother. I wanted to demonstrate my riding skills to Laura. With out saying a word I turned Sam around and headed home in a dead gallop.

At the time I guess I did not know a horse is a very gregarious animal. At any rate Queenie was not about to stay out in the back 40 alone. Laura’s horse Queenie turned and followed me home also in a gallop.

Laura was too paralyzed with fear and too busy hanging on to do anything about it.

We went galloping home past the garden where Mom was pulling weeds. Mom was yelling at us to slow down, which I finally did. To say that Laura was angry with me would be an under statement. Laura was usually soft spoken. I don’t remember what she said to me but she made it very clear that she was not pleased. Laura probably is the only person that galloped on her first horseback ride. Thank God she did not fall off; to this day I feel guilty and shudder to think what could have happened had she fallen off.

That day I ruined it for myself. Laura never went riding with me again. In fact I don’t think she ever got on a horse again. However, she did forgive me.

Take care and don’t go horseback riding with a showoff brother.

When Laura and I got to be 15 years old the job of milking the cows was handed over to us. In the winter we didn’t milk many cows but the rest of the year we milked from 18 to 24 head. This meant we spent about an hour in the morning and an hour at night milking the cows. This gave us a lot of time to talk, about school friends etc. One night during milking we got the idea to name our cows. We thought it would be cool to give our cows the same name as out aunts, of which we had many. When we used their names to refer to the ones that had a new calf, Mom didn’t thing it was funny. The first year around Christmas time we ask for a new bike, Mom said if our milk check was 500.00 we could have a new bike. That month the milk check was $632.00 and we received a shiny new bike. The only bike we had before that was an old used one that was broken most of the time.

Laura was always popular in High School, she was president of our class, and Laura never played basketball or other sports. She always studied hard. Laura had one of the main parts in the school play. Sally, in “Don’t Take My Penny” (A Maid with a Purpose) I was Monsieur Henri (a French Designer) I don’t ever remember her getting into trouble. Since there were no buses back then, we drove Dad’s 1954 Chevy to school which was great. Sometimes we had to drive the 1942 Chevy pickup to school which was not so great.

The trip to school gave us another chance to talk about things at school, boy girl things etc.

We graduated High School in 1956. After High School Laura took a job with the phone company. Then I guess it was time for us to go our separate ways.

Laura joined the Sisters of St. Francis in 1957. She taught school for a number of years in Waterloo. Later she became principle at St. Mary's in Cascade. After 13 years as a nun she felt this was not her calling, someone once said she left because God wanted the three of you born.

And you all know the rest of the story.

Fortunate to have had your Mom as a twin.

Uncle Larry

When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle street, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline and plugged his siphon hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had.

Homily by Fr. Charles Skok,

May 18, 2008, at Knights of Columbus Convention in Spokane

Excellent homily by Fr. Charles Skok

From: bobjoy
Subject: Fr. Skok sermon KC Memorial Mass
Date: Sun, 25 May 2008 09:23:12 -0700
Here is the sermon Fr. Skok delivered at the Memorial Mass at the KC
Convention last weekend.
Bob

Very often the greeting used at the beginning of Mass is: "The Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you." That is the way St. Paul ends his second letter to the Corinthians, our second reading today.

Today we celebrate our faith in the One True God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. One God in Three persons, and we should celebrate God who is our Creator, our Savior, and our Sanctifier. God is great, far greater than we could ever imagine!

In our first reading, Moses is with the Lord, and the Lord cried out: "The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity." Our Gospel reading contains the famous "John 3:16" that you often see displayed on placards at ball parks around the country, usually where the television cameras have to focus: "God so loved the world that He gave His only son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life."

So, today, as people of faith, we are amazed at the glory of God. As Knights of Columbus, you have no doubt that we live "Under God." There is no doubt in our hearts that in God "we live and move and have our being," as St. Paul tells us.

Whether it is our rational assurance that there is a God (and belief in God is not irrational) or our exuberance over our awareness of the presence of God, or our enthusiasm in the warmth of our hearts experiencing the gifts of the Holy Spirit moving and directing our lives, we have to realize that not all people have those same thoughts and experiences. Many do not share in our religious faith and love, which are, in themselves, gifts from God. Many do not even make God an after-thought. Many never see the inside of a church.

The Second Vatican Council document "The Church in the Modern World" was prophetic in stating: "Atheism must … be regarded as one of the most serious problems of our time." Many countries of the world were under the domination of atheistic Communism when those words were written – Russia and the Eastern European countries and China and some surrounding countries. Atheism was the official government policy of those countries, and the attempts at Communist expansionism were also attempts at the expansion of atheism. There was to be no place for God in human affairs.

Today there is a "new atheism." Many writers cite religious fundamentalism as one of the causes. The Second Vatican Council observed that "believers can have more than a little to do with the use of atheism." Just think of Islamic "jihadism" or Christian apartheid. Other writers point to disputes over the relationship between faith and science. The "new atheism" is very critical of religion and harshly strident in its tone – and their books are bestsellers!

Perhaps you know their names: Christopher Hitchen’s book "God Is No Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," Richard Dawkins’ book "The God Delusion," Daniel Dennett’s book "Breaking the Spell," and Samuel Harris’ book "The End of Faith." These authors are not only atheists; they are aggressive atheists!

They do not reject "a faulty notion of God;" they reject God. They do not reject aberrations in the practices of Christian faith (and there are many); they reject Christian faith. They do not reject extremes of religion; they reject religion.

I am not being hard on atheists. Even the Second Vatican Council urged Christians "to seek out the motives that lead the atheistic mind to deny God" (20). But I am at a loss to find any reasonable sense in the "new atheism." They battle, not the Christian image of God we celebrate today, but caricatures of that image. The God they rail against is not the God of the Judaeo-Christian tradition we revere. It is not the God of all creation. And it is certainly not the God revealed by Jesus Christ, the God who loves us and cares for us with an infinite love.

The "new atheists" see a God who is incompatible with science, not a God who is the creator of all that science can study. Science can study and answer the "How" question, but science cannot even come close to answering the "why" question which is the most important question of all. Science can answer the question how things work, but it cannot touch the question how things began.

When we read the attacks of atheists on religion, we can become frustrated because we do not recognize ourselves or our religious communities in their scathing attacks. The religious faith we know does not "poison" anything. It enables what we do. The "new atheists" say we "believe without evidence." Sam Harris calls theology "little more than a branch of human ignorance." Richard Dawkins says that only science is qualified to decide the question of God’s existence. On what grounds? Dawkins also says that religion is a "virus" and that monotheism is "the great unmentionable evil at the center of our culture." Daniel Dennett depicts religion as a willful attempt to pass on ignorance. Sam Harris says Sacred Scripture immunizes people from asking critical questions. Those are harsh, belligerent words.

Of course, the "new atheists" make all kinds of unsubstantiated assertions and gratuitous assumptions in their attempts to ridicule Christian and religious faith. For them, God is not worth a decent argument. They start with the premise that there is no God, that God does not exist; then they marshal together what I consider shallow and deceptive evidence to uphold their anti-God cause. They even make me long for the atheists of the immediately past centuries like Feuerbach, Schopenhauer, Nietzche, Eliot or Freud. At least they were atheists of some philosophical substance! I would have to agree with the Oxford author, John Lennon, commenting on the "new atheists": "on matters of theology, their arguments are a disguise: asserting without substance, demanding evidence, while offering none, staggeringly unscholarly."

Many articles are now appearing to counter the "new atheism." The "new atheists," according to the Wall Street Journal, have sold about a million books. Theologians like Richard Gaillardty, John Harght, Stephen Pope, and Michael Buckley have taken them on.

But it is not the intellectual and theological arguments which will do the job. The best response is the witness of our Christian and Catholic faith and love and action. Jesus said: "By their fruits you will know them." Over the years, I have seen the fruits of both theoretical and practical atheism, and you have too. You have seen it in nations, in societies, in communities, in families. The evil of our times did not come about by our Faith in God and practice of Gospel Christian love. The experience of atheism is not a pretty picture! And, over the years; I have seen the fruits of Catholic lives lived in faith and love and service. There have been failings and blemishes and scars, true, but the good that has been accomplished is overwhelming – not only in their own personal lives but also in the society around them. They have produced good fruit, and continue to produce good fruit.

On this Trinity Sunday, we renew our faith in God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We offer our adoration and praise to the all-holy God. We recognize that it is only in being faithful to God that we can be faithful to God’s Church, God’s people, and to God’s creation. Blessed be God now and forever!
